How to Balance Your pH and Enjoy Optimum Health

Eating too much of certain foods and too little of others can affect the acid-alkaline balance in your system, causing a myriad of problems. Sugar, gluten, dairy, coffee, meat, soda, and artificial sweeteners are the worst offenders. An alkaline diet can restore your body’s pH levels and boost overall health. The term “pH” stands for potential of hydrogen and indicates the alkalinity or acidity of your blood and tissues.

Understanding the Body’s pH Balance

The acid/alkaline balance of the blood is one of the most important yet overlooked aspects of health and well-being. The ideal pH range is between 7.30 and 7.45. When your body is too acidic, it creates an environment where bacteria can grow and thrive. In the long run, acidosis may lead to inflammation, respiratory disorders, cardiovascular damage, yeast overgrowth, and chronic pain.

Too much acidity has been also linked to weight gain, premature aging, headaches, low energy, and poor sleep. Acne breakouts and allergies are common side effects. The accumulation of acids and toxins combined with stress triggers an inflammation response in the body, which increases your risk of diseases. These problems occur when the lungs and kidneys can not keep your body’s pH levels in balance. A pH of 7.30 or lower indicates acidosis.

When you’re stressed, your body’s pH drops. Too much acidity may be also caused by antibiotics, alcohol, overtraining, toxin buildup, and poor nutrition. Certain foods, especially those high in sugar and protein, affect your acid/alkaline balance. Good nutrition can help maintain a slightly alkaline pH and protect your body from diseases. You may check the pH of your saliva at home by using a piece of litmus paper.

How to Alkalize Your Body through Diet

More and more people are reaching to alkaline foods to balance their pH levels naturally. An alkaline diet is based on fruits, vegetables, legumes, and nuts. It also limits meat, fish, dairy, eggs, grains, alcohol, and highly processed foods. This eating pattern helps prevent chronic diseases, boosts cognitive function, and supports bone health.

The first thing you should do is to drink more fluids. The pH level of pure water is close to 7, so it may help increase dietary alkalinity. Today, most health stores offer alkaline water, which is less acidic than tap water. It also boasts higher doses of calcium, magnesium, potassium, silica, and other minerals that support healthy acid/alkaline balance. Some studies suggest that alkaline water can improve athletic performance, reduce toxic load, and reverse liver damage caused by advanced glycation endproducts.

Make sure your diet consists of alkaline foods, such as almonds, argula, artichokes, avocado, broccoli, beetroot, cauliflower, cabbage, chia seeds, and collard greens. Certain spices, such as cumin and basil, can help restore your pH balance too. Limit coffee and soft drinks to minimize harmful acids. Ideally, your meals should include 80 percent alkaline foods and 20 percent acidic foods. Drink alkaline water or use a reverse osmosis filter for tap water. Add a few slices of lime or lemon to boost its alkalinity.
